“Solitary”

A solitary beer

Held by a solitary man

One hand holding bottle

As fingers from the other hand

Picks off label from the bottle

A solitary beer

Held by a solitary man

Who does not raise his head

Or move his eyes

From what he does

The Bar not closed

Might as well have been

Bartender stands just wiping glasses

With chequered towel he holds

Trying to ignore

His solitary customer

With his solitary beer

Label in pieces scattered on bar top

Then in,  She walks

Neither man looks her way

Until she signals the Bartender

He nods his head to say “what’s your drink”

“Vodka Orange on the rocks”

Her soft voice whispers

Bartender nods

As he turns to walk to end of bar

He glances at the solitary man

And winks with his left eye

Towards the woman

Nicely dressed, softly spoken

But the solitary man remains so

Still tearing at the label

He does not look up

Or glance her way

He just remains the same
