“Poetry Afternoon”

The start of a new week will begin with a controversial Poet.

Oscar, Fingal, O’Flahertie, Wills, Wilde.   Irish Playwright, Novelist, Essayist and Poet.  One of London’s  most popular Playwrights in the early 1890s.

Born October 16, 1854    –    Dublin, Ireland.

Died  November 30, 1900    –    Paris, France.   He died of  Cerebral Meningitis.

Wilde married Constance Lloyd in 1884 and they had two Sons, but in 1891 Wilde began an affair with Lord Alfred Douglas, nicknamed “Bosie”.   In April 1895 Wilde sued Bosie’s Father the Marquis of Queensbury for libel, after the Marquis had accused him of being Homosexual.  Wilde lost and after details of his private life were revealed during the trial, was arrested and tried for gross indecency.  He was sentenced to two years hard labour.   While in prison he composed a long letter to Douglas, posthumously published under the title “De Profundis”.   His Wife took their Children to live in Switzerland and adopted the name of “Holland”.   Wilde was released with his health irrevocably damaged and his reputation ruined.   He spent the rest of his life in Europe, and he published “The Ballad of Reading Gaol” in 1898.

In 1857 Wilde’s young Sister Isola aged 9 died of Meningitis, Wilde wrote the following Poem to her memory.

Tread lightly, she is near

Under the snow,

Speak gently, she can hear

The daisies grow.

All her bright golden hair

Tarnished with rust,

She that was young and fair

Fallen to dust.

Lily-like, white as snow,

She hardly knew

She was a woman, so

Sweetly she grew.

Coffin-board, heavy stone,

Lie on her breast,

I vex my heart alone

She is at rest.

Peace, Peace, she cannot hear

Lyre or sonnet,

All my life’s buried here,

Heap earth upon it.

I love the following Quotes of Oscar Wilde.

“To love one self is the beginning of a life-long Romance”

“Keep love in your heart. A life without it is like a sunless garden, when the flowers are dead”   –   This quote is so very true.

“If you are not too long I will wait here for you all my life”   –   This quote to me is just so beautiful, touching, and heartfelt, I feel that too.

“Memory….is the diary that we all carry about with us”

“Women are made to be loved, not understood”   –  I hope this last one will not offend any woman reading it, but what men do understand women.

I hope you enjoyed the above quotes there are far too many, he was a fascinating Man, wonderful mind.
