CAREFULLY IRONED

As she carefully ironed

she tried to stop her tears

from falling onto his shirts

as she slowly but surely

ironed every crease out

She had folded

his underpants

and his socks

neatly

after ironing them

All she had ironed

she now placed in the basket

for the items that had been ironed

the basket read

“All ironed ready to hang and put away”

written in her small handwriting

She placed the basket on the stairs

ready to be carried up

and put away

in his wardrobe and dresser

As she turned

and unplugged the iron

she stood there knowing

it would be the last time

There He sat

in his chair

his whisky glass

on the side table by him

his cigarette still burning

in his black marble ashtray

She turned to look at him

made the phone call she had to

sat in her chair her usual chair

and looked to him

the blood still dripping

from the bullet hole

in the side of his head

She turned the radio up

to listen to the music

she could never iron

without music

she sat there calmly

smoking one of his cigarettes

When the Police arrived

what else was to be said

except the truth

and would she be believed

only time would tell

Remember Al Martino from the “Godfather” 1 and 3?

  1. Sneaky! Loved it! I’m reading The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, and I swear you could have written that story. New wife moves in with hubby, his mother, and TWO sisters. They have two little boys, hubby dies. She finally gets brave enough to strike out on her own. THIS could have been YOUR story, Anna. Should have been! Have you read it?

    1. No damn it, but I think I may well go and find a copy to read, sounds like ME as you say, was it made into a film with Rex Harrison a real old British Black and White. I will be writing to you, I was so taken with your email. Our PM Theresa May has called a General Election for June 8, all excitement here.

      1. Yes, it was made into both a movie and a TV show with Hope Lang and Edward Mulhare. It just reminds me so much of you! πŸ˜€ Very easy read. About 160 pages. The way you write about thinking your love was right there in the room with you, you can still see the indent in his pillow, etc., I just thought, crap! Anna could have a ghost lover! πŸ˜€

    2. Just ordered First Edition from Amazon (second hand) can’t wait to read it. Did you know that Gene Tierney suffered with terrible Depression, hence why she was not seen for a long time, fascinating story about Gene Tierney. One never knows Cheryl, “Ghost”? Smell the aftershave, feel the warmth, could well happen, who is to say.
